Walnaring

Introduction

Sitting alone at Wallan East is a property with a rich and diverse history, but which is widely unknown. This property is known today as ‘Walnaring’ and possesses a unique trait in that it is rumoured to be the true birthplace of Ned Kelly. This contentious topic is not covered by this article and it instead traces how Walnaring came to be and the people that lived there over its lifetime. Amongst those people were Ned Kelly, his mother Ellen, his father John “Red” Kelly and as the owners of the property, his grandparents James and Mary Quinn.
