The origin of the street names of Wallan Wallan

Researching the street names of Wallan Wallan was a project that started in June 2021 by posting one street at a time, so that members could comment on the origin of the name. This project continues today (30 March 2023), as new names on the western side of High Street, continue to be posted.

Angus Way – possibly named after Angus McDonald (died 1972) who owned land locally

Benjamin Court – possibly named after Ken and Betty Benjamin local sporting identities

Bentinck Street – possibly after Lord William Bentinck (1774-1839)

Budd Avenue – named after William Hartley Budd (1812-1888) a prominent early landholder

Butler Court – possibly named after John Francis Butler (died 1985) a local councillor and sportsman

Cameron Court – possibly named after Alasdair Cameron (died 1963) and his wife Ethel Helen Margaret Jolly (died 1976), popular local identities

Cleve Court – named after local community identities Frederick and Flora Cleve

Commercial Drive – an appropriated name for Wallan Wallan’s industrial Estate

Coustley Court – named after Charles Robert Coustley (died 2002) and his wife May Josephine (died 2012) , popular local identities

Duke Street – possibly after the 1st Duke of Wellington (1769-1852)

Eden Place – possibly after the biblical paradise Garden of Eden or locality Eden Park to the east

Editorial Avenue – named after a Victorian trotter

Elisha Court – possibly named after a Victorian trotter

Enterprise Way – an appropriated name for Wallan Wallan’s industrial Estate

Forbes Boulevard – named after Percy John Robert Forbes (died 1970) a prominent local identity

Freeway Drive – located next to the Hume Freeway

High Street – indicating this is the main street in the town

Innovation Drive – an appropriated name for Wallan Wallan’s industrial Estate

King Street – recognising the Kings of Great Britain

Kirribilli Crescent – possibly named after the Sydney suburb of Kirribilli which relates to the aboriginal word Kiarabilli meaning “good fishing spot”

Laffan Close – named after three generations of the Laffan family – John (died 1901) and Esther Laffan, their only child, John Francis Laffan (died 1932) and his wife Margaret, and their eight children.

MaCarthy Court – named after David Felix McCarthy (died 1982) a local identity who served in World War One

McNaughton Close – named after John William (died 1982) and Constance Irene (died 1975) McNaughton, long time residents of Wallan Wallan

Munroe Court – possibly named after local residents Hugh Innes Munro (1890-1962) and his wife Bridget Gerte McCarthy

Nikolia Court – named after a Victorian trotter

North Station Road – located north of the Wallan Railway Station

Parkside Drive – located to the south side of Hidden Valley, a park like estate

Poplar Way – named after a Victorian trotter

Providence Avenue – named after a Victorian trotter

Queen Street – recognising the Queens of Great Britain

Raimeno Road – named after a Victorian trotter

Randall Crescent – named after Nathaniel Templeman Randell (died 1913) a popular local businessman

Rays Round – possibly named after Raymond Francis Stockdale (died 1989), a prominent local sporting identity

Sinclair Court – possibly named after Hugh and Margaret Sinclair, first to operate a general store in Wallan Wallan

South Station Street – located south of the Wallan Railway Station

Station Street – located along the western side of the Wallan Railway Station

Vallence Court – named after Jeremiah and Alice Vallence who both made significant contributions to the local community

Watson Street – possibly after the ship Isabella Watson which was lost at sea in 1852 attempting to enter Port Phillip

Wedding Drive – named after Percy August Wedding (died 1973) a leading local identity

William Street – possibly after King William IV (1765-1837)

Windham Street – possibly after William Windham (1750-1810)
